Meet the Team - Eddie Leng

Eddie Leng is a project manager at Supply Chain North East which brings together four key partners to work with over 800 businesses through to 2021, supporting them to identify opportunities in new and existing markets. An integral part of the North East Growth Hub, Supply Chain North East is delivered across the region by RTC North, Generator, North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA) and North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC).

What’s a typical day on Supply Chain North East?

A typical day involves, a mix of client meetings, and report writing. Client meetings are all about getting to understand the business; what they do and, identifying where we can help. So, asking lots of questions and most importantly LISTENING are critical parts of my role.

Once you have gathered the information the next job is to get this into a format which enables you to develop a client diagnostic and action plan. Once the diagnostic is executed a forward action plan is derived, this identifies the actions required to assist the client to move forward and meet theirs and the programmes business objectives.

What is typical in a business’s supply chain that you want to help them fix?

No organisations have identical issues or problems that require a typical ‘fix’ for their business! There are, however, a number of themes that tend to come to the surface; these can range widely but the more common ones tend to be; route to market; issues regarding process improvement; capability building; sector understanding; new client introductions; how to join the network; how to successfully market your product or business.

What is your background experience?

For the past 35 years, I’ve worked in various roles, ranging from a senior manager within a world class automotive first tier supplier, to setting up the North East Automotive Academy and working as a consultant for the Engineering Sector Skills Council advising SME Companies.

More recently, I’ve, worked for the North East Automotive Alliance as project manager; covering various roles including business development and SME supply chain development.

What are the values that drive you?

Integrity, honesty, respect, commitment, reliability, patience, dependability and loyalty.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Socialising, walking, grandparent duties, sports spectator, music and reading.

Supply Chain North East is a multimillion programme aimed at revolutionising the way SMEs diversify their offering and embrace new markets. The programme has received more than £3m of funding from the England European Regional Development Fund, which is part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.
